New Modern Aircraft Carrier Models

Great additions to the field of aircraft carrier model kits were added recently.  Perhaps the most significant is the Orange Hobby 1/700 scale HMS Hermes in it's Falklands Fit.  A kit of the Hermes has been at the top of many most wanted lists for years.  Now it is available in resin in 1/700 scale.

Modelwarships has a very detailed review of the kit. Click here to learn more.  I can only hope that Orange Hobby or some else does a version in 1/350 scale.  Please!

Although this is technically not a modern aircraft carrier, DML has released another version of its Independence Class light carriers called USS Princeton.  Even though they were a stop gap measure, the Independence Class enjoyed long post-war carriers. Two were transferred to France and saw service in Indochina and during the 1956 Suez war. The Cabot, later the Dédalo would serve the Spanish Navy into the 1980s as an ASW carrier equipped with AV8A Harriers.

Other than the Princeton, which was sunk, and the Independence which was used as a target at the Bikini nuclear test, the rest served the U.S. in Korea as light attack carriers and the Monterery served as training carrier.

I plan on building the Monterrey as a training carrier at some point and will equip it with a flight of SNJs in bright 1950s training colors.

From the far east, Fujimi brings us their 1/350 JMSDF Hyuga.  This is not an aircraft carrier per se. Officially it is listed as a helicopter-carrying destroyer for political reasons, but it is actually a modern day escort carrier.  For a first look of the sprues and directions, click here.

The kit has just been released and at first glance it appears to be of similar quality to some of the recent Hasagawa kits.  The kit comes with a variety of helicopters including a MCH101, and various SH-60s.  Trumpeter makes a set with extra SH-60Js if you need them.

This should be an excellent addition to the modern aircraft carrier field (Yes, I know it is a destroyer technically). Freetimehobbies is currently taking pre-orders. See http://www.freetimehobbies.com/FUJ60002-3.aspx

Finally, Orange Hobby released a 1/700 scale model of HMS Ocean. Looks like it could be a really cool kit. Check it out at http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/ships/hms/amphib/ocean-700-ohb/ohb-review.html
